Creative Makes and a Little Bit of “Forged” Love Fills the “Hearts and Arrows” Eclectic Box Goods

How cool that one of the main Goods in our Hearts and Arrows box has been created by blacksmith entrepreneur, Sherrod Martin. We loved his ideas when we asked him to create a purposeful art piece and he really came through.  And the steel double arrow wood board he designed for Eclectic Box Goods was a perfect addition.

Sherrod is a woodworking, blacksmithing, small business consulting entrepreneur by day and co-owns an escape room by night.  He has a passion for molding metal and wood into art and creating something useful.  He has always loved woodworking, building furniture and custom pieces for the past 10 years and about two years ago, discovered a love for blacksmithing and added this to his list of creative outlets.

IMG_1678He custom designed the two-prong arrow and distressed wood hanger for us and it is fascinating to think that the arrows started out as just one huge sheet of 3/8″ steel.  Sherrod cut the arrows with a plasma cutter, heated the arrows in a propane forge and then added the decorative touches by hand with chisel and hammer.  Then, the arrows were heated again and bent into their final shape.

Sherrod dips the arrows into melted beeswax which provides a sealant and protective coating.  The arrows were then attached to a distressed wood board which had been stained and sealed.IMG_1660

We are thrilled with the result and to be able to document and share some of his creative processes.

Lady Alamo Arrow Dopp Bag

The arrow box zip “Dopp” bag was designed by San Francisco based company “Lady Alamo” which is owned and operated by Yiva and Bryce Beal.  Lady bagAlamo designs their own fabric and we thought the “Arrow” bag was perfect for our theme.

All Lady Alamo goods are made in the USA and the company started in the living room of a small apartment in San Francisco in 2011.  As they grew, they moved operations to a shared space and finally earlier this year opened up a brick and mortar shop and workshop.  And they are proud to say they are still producing their goods in San Francisco.

The “Dopp bag” is a water repellent and machine washable bag and is perfect for cosmetics, school and craft supplies, electronics and more.

Fun Fact:  The Dopp bag or Dopp kit is a term particularly used in America for toiletry bags.  The name derives from the early 20th-century leather craftsman Charles Doppelt, whose company designed the bag in 1926.

We discovered Anne’s art when we were looking for art for our Hearts and Arrow themed box.  We asked her if we could reproduce her arrow painting on a button and she agreed. Anne is a self-taught artist who grew up painting and drawing and has always loved art.  She worked as a teacher for 10 years but has always pursued her love of art and painting. button arrows In 2016, she opened a shop on Etsy (birdsandberrystudio) and began selling her artwork.  If you would like a free downloadable (and other freebies) print for her arrow art you can subscribe to her website at http://www.birdsandberrystudio.com/.

Other Goodies

We created the tiny “Be Mine” sign by digitally printing it and then building a wooden frame from salvaged wood which we stained.

In addition, we designed and created the frame-able “Arrow” print and we made the “Heart and Arrow” necklace.
